DRUGS IN TORCIDA

At that time we use to meet at Matejusica and at the time glue was popular. Everyone sniffed like a lot. We'd go to the steps of Marjan and would stick our heads in the bags, so at night the whole street would be on glue, and the bags were everywhere... And pot was popular a lot (it didn't lose its popularity to this day), but the glue dominated. In early 80's in Torcida there was this guy called Maslo. Anyway, he was really active into all aspects of supporting scene, he first started wearing bomber jacket to games, so that's how a few of us first "bough" them for the first in Trst. We went inside a warehouse, there was no one working where those jackets were held. Maslo took off his old jacket, and replaced it with the new one, who knew that they had those things that make trigger a siren on the way out. As he went through the door all happy that he did a good job, the thing started triggered the alarm, and we were right behind him. Security guards jumped on him straight away, and we went back to take our original jackets. So we ended up buying the first ultras bomber jackets instead... I said ultras, because the only people that use to wear them besides us were punk rockers. Maslo was one tricky character. He would fuck you up before you know it. For ultras thing he wasn't an asshole, he was a fighter and he went to all away games. He was the fist one to start writing to Italian and other ultras through "Guerin sportiva" (Later on we all started to do the same), but he was the one that used that for good, so he started travelling around Italy and would go there for many Derbies. Some Italian ultras would do the same - come to his house. There is a separate story on that how he fucked up this Italian guy when he was at his place in Udinese, that was a good laugh. He couldn't drink a lot, in other words, he didn't like it, he would throw up after a couple of drinks, and as he was with us, the people that could drink a lot and all the time, he felt a bit out of place. So first he started taking tablets, mostly sanatose and apaurins. That was around '85, and as he started to be more around the same minded people, we slowly started to lose any contact with him. It was all a question when he'll start with the syringe.
Heroin, and the whole thing about using heroin at that time in Split was looked on differently. What can I say, at that time Split was always on the cover of newspapers as the number 1 city for drugs in ex-Yugoslavia. We kinda liked that, because at that time we were first in everything from supporting, choreography, away games, number of members and so on, so we looked at that as one more thing to be added on the list. After all, it was then when some of the songs about drugs started to emerge (Cili je Split...). Number of people on heroin multiplied every day, but for us, normal people that didn't use it. it was all normal to hang around them. Yes, Maslo first started with it, and after him the hell broke lose. And everything was fine until the first victim. Parangal was found in Bastiona (that is one cheap restaurant in Marmont street, at the place where McDonalds is now). His head just fell on the table, and they all thought that he fell asleep. The situation got ever worse in 90's with the start of war. A lot of people started to use it and fucked them selves up, some killed themselves, and some of them are even today asking for money like Paolo in front of Stari Plac. Some smaller number of them went to communes, some succeeded in rehabilitation, others didn't, and some started to disappear when they thought that they succeeded as they went to Spain or Brazil. Anyway this is one darker story about a trend that we liked and supported and were proud of, but in the end some paid a price for it with their lives..
